Germany is home to many foreigners who come from around the world to study, work or just live in the country. As healthcare is an important part of living in Germany, it’s important for them to know how a foreigner can get health insurance in Germany.
Fortunately, it’s relatively easy for most foreigners to get health insurance in Germany.
Here’s what you need to know:
-If you’re a non-European citizen and you’re staying in Germany for more than three months, you’ll have to have health insurance from the start of your stay. This can either be from a private insurer or from a German public health insurance provider.
-If you’re a EU citizen, you’ll have to have health insurance from the start of your stay. The most common form of health insurance for EU citizens is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which can be obtained from your home country.
-If you’re a student or an employee, you should check to see if your employer or school has an insurance plan that they’ll provide you with. Otherwise, you’ll need to get insurance from a private insurer or a public provider in Germany.
-If you’re a student and you’re under 30 years old, you may be eligible to join the Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (GKV), a public health insurance provider in Germany.
-If you’re an employee, you’re legally obliged to have insurance and will have to be registered with a public health insurance provider.
