Washington State provides paid family and medical leave benefits to most employees in the state. Depending on the size of your company, you may be exempt from these benefits. Companies with fewer than 50 employees are exempt from providing paid family or medical leave. Additionally, if you are an independent contractor, you are not entitled to these benefits.
For employers who are subject to the requirement, eligible employees are those who have worked in Washington State and employers for at least 820 hours in the previous year. Employees who are union members are also entitled to these benefits. However, employees of religious organizations or those employed by a parent, guardian, or spouse are exempt from this law.
If you are unsure if you are eligible, the Washington State Employment Security Department is available to answer any questions you may have. You can also contact your local employment office or visit their website to learn more.
